Teacher Spotlight From The Middle East: Coby Reynolds

Why do you think it’s important to connect your students globally on UClass?

I think that students need to connect globally as world issues affect everyone. It is more important here in Sharjah, where we have a range of nationalities in one school. At VISS (Victoria International School Sharjah) we have students from across the whole world, which as educators we must accommodate for his variation of cultures and beliefs. Using UClass, students are able to discuss and have input on global issues making them more aware of the world they live in. Most of our students here will attend universities all across the world, so having a global perspective for our students, I believe, is a very high priority.

How do you use UClass in your classroom?

At present I am trying to encourage the students to connect and respond to each others post to solve issues by themselves. We recently conducted an iPad trial at school and used Uclass as a central platform for discussion and feedback for the day. It was great to see some of the students responses from the day online.

Share a great moment that your students have had while using UClass.

It is all about the connection that the students have with me as a teacher. They have been able to contact me, and other students, to solve a varied range of problems. “Who is better Messi or Ronaldo?”, was a question posed by a boy in my class. For those who do not follow football, the question sparked a lot of intrest and discussion online and in the classroom. This is just the beginning of what is possible through online collaboration with students in school and more importantly at home.

What do you love about being a teacher?

The simple answer would be holidays….right? Well that is one of the perks of the job, however I just love working with kids. No matter what age they are they all require certain guidance in what they are trying to achieve. Not many people can say that they love their job but I can. The fact is now I am teaching overseas and traveling the world still doing what I enjoy. Doesn’t get much better than that.

What events in your life have enriched your global perspective?

As mentioned previously, traveling would have the most influence my global perspective. Now teaching at an International School overseas this has influenced and enriched my global perspective. It also has had an effect on my teaching to cater for my international classroom of students.
